The Cottage History

The Coach and Gatehouse is a grade II * listed property which dates from 1871 and was part of a hunting lodge built by the 7th Earl Cowper in part of old Sherwood Forest. The Cottage itself was converted to a character home from the former stables and coach house, one of the bedrooms sits over the entrance to the inner courtyard. The Cottage is part of the North wing of the imposing Beauvale House with its Victorian 90ft Hunting Tower, high above the wood. Beauvale House retains a strong connection with the writings of DH Lawrence, with many of the characters supposedly based on staff and residents of Beauvale at the turn of the 19th/20th century. A derelict cottage believed to be The game keeper’s cottage now lies derelict in the nearby woodland and the red gate (of Lady Chatterley’s Lover fame) remains in the walled garden of Beauvale House.

Directions
Moorgreen village is 10 minutes from either Junction 26 or 27 of the M1. The driveway to the Cottage is next to Moorgreen Reservoir (Moorgreen Carp Fishery) which is approximately 0.5 miles to the North of Moorgreen village. A small lodge house is visible at the start of the private drive which leads to Beauvale House (avoid driving down the bridleway to the left mid way up the drive). Moorgreen reservoir has fishing available by permit and public footpaths skirt the lake and enter the woodland which runs to the North and rolling farm land. There is a circular walk around the reservoir and through the woodland (5 Miles).
